Does Navexa Support Short Selling or Futures?

Learn whether Navexa supports short selling, futures and perpetual futures, what activity imports correctly, and why these positions cannot be tracked accurately.

Navexa is a long-only portfolio tracker and does not currently support short positions, futures or perpetual futures.

What Navexa Supports

Navexa supports standard buy and sell transactions for supported shares, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), cryptocurrencies and other investments.

A Sell transaction can reduce units you already hold. It cannot open a negative position or create a sell-to-open trade.

What Isn't Supported

Navexa does not currently support:

  • Short selling, including short and cover transactions.

  • Futures or perpetual futures contracts.

  • Leveraged or margin positions that can hold a negative quantity.

  • Contract details such as leverage, margin, funding payments, expiry or liquidation.

  • Automated profit and loss calculations for derivative positions.

Why Positions Don't Reconcile

Navexa expects a holding's quantity to remain at zero or above. A transaction that sells more units than the holding owns creates a negative quantity and may trigger a Holdings Need Attention warning.

Futures and perpetual futures are contracts rather than spot holdings. Navexa cannot accurately represent their contract size, leverage, funding costs or open-position lifecycle using standard buy and sell trades.

Import Limitations

A broker or exchange connection may import supported spot activity while excluding short positions, futures and other derivatives. The same limitation applies to broker files and spreadsheet imports.

Important: Reversing trade dates, creating artificial buy transactions or converting a futures trade into a spot trade can produce inaccurate quantities, performance and tax reports.

Manual Tracking

A Custom Investment may help you record a high-level manual value or result. It does not provide contract-level tracking or make a futures or short position fully supported.

If short selling or derivatives are a major part of your investing, Navexa may not provide the specialist tracking you need. For options-specific guidance, see Does Navexa Support Options? (Workarounds for Covered Calls, Puts, and Option Premiums).
