How to Use Growth & Goals in Navexa

Learn how to set a portfolio goal in Navexa, track progress towards your target, and understand Portfolio Growth, Capital Gains and New Capital.

Growth & Goals lets you set a target value for a portfolio and see how your portfolio is progressing towards that target over time.

Open Growth & Goals

To open the report:

  1. Select the portfolio you want to track.

  2. Open Performance from the left-hand menu.

  3. Select Growth & Goals.

Growth & Goals is set separately for each portfolio.

Set Your Goal

If you haven't created a goal for the selected portfolio, select Set Goal.

Enter:

  • Goal Name: A name that helps you identify the target, such as "Home Deposit" or "Retirement Portfolio".

  • Target Amount: The portfolio value you're aiming to reach.

  • Goal Start Date: The date you want Navexa to begin measuring your progress from.

  • Goal End Date: The date you're aiming to reach the target.

Once a goal has been created, you can use Edit Goal to change these details.

You can currently have one goal for each portfolio.

Choose Your Start Date

Your Goal Start Date is important because it determines the starting point Navexa uses when measuring your progress.

Choose a date on or before your initial investment if you want to measure progress from the beginning of the portfolio.

You can also choose a later date if you only want to measure progress from a particular point in time.

For example, you might choose a later date if you've changed your investment strategy and want to track progress from that point onwards.

Choosing a start date after significant deposits or other cash movements can also affect the amount shown under Growth from New Capital.

Track Your Progress

The goal bar shows how your current portfolio value compares with your target.

You'll see:

  • Your current value towards the goal.

  • The percentage of your goal reached.

  • Your target amount.

If your portfolio exceeds the target, your progress can move beyond 100%.

Portfolio Growth

The Portfolio Growth chart shows how the value of your portfolio has changed during the goal period.

You'll see your actual portfolio growth alongside the path towards your target.

This makes it easier to see whether you're currently ahead of or behind the progress required to reach the goal by your selected end date.

The figures shown in Growth & Goals are based on the data recorded in your Navexa portfolio, including your holdings and relevant portfolio cashflows.

Growth From Capital Gains

Growth from Capital Gains shows how changes in the market value of your investments have contributed to your progress.

A positive amount means changes in investment values have increased your portfolio during the selected period.

A negative amount means market movements have reduced its value.

This helps separate growth generated by your investments from growth caused by adding more capital.

Growth From New Capital

Growth from New Capital shows the contribution made by cashflows rather than changes in investment prices.

Depending on the activity recorded in your portfolio, this can include:

  • Money added to the portfolio.

  • Money withdrawn from the portfolio.

  • Dividends, distributions and other income.

  • Other recorded cash movements.

Because it considers more than deposits alone, Growth from New Capital won't necessarily equal the total amount you've deposited.

Change The Date Range

You can adjust the date range shown on the Growth & Goals page.

Use Full Goal Period to view the period associated with your goal, or select a shorter date range when you want to examine part of that period in more detail.

The charts update to reflect the selected period.

Common Issues

Why Does New Capital Look Wrong?

Growth from New Capital isn't simply a total of your deposits.

If the amount looks unexpected, check:

  • Your Goal Start Date.

  • Deposits and withdrawals recorded in the portfolio.

  • Dividends, distributions and other income.

  • Other cash movements during the selected period.

For example, if money was deposited before your goal started but the investment transaction occurred after the start date, the selected period may not include all of the activity you expected.

Why Is My Goal Progress Wrong?

Growth & Goals relies on the transactions and portfolio data recorded in Navexa.

If the current value or growth figures don't look right, first check that your holdings, transactions, income and cash movements are complete for the selected portfolio and period.

Also check that you've selected the intended portfolio, goal dates and report date range.
